To reconstruct in a few words what could be said about Sicily is impossible. Because Sicily’s history is extraordinarily ancient and glorious, and its vestiges can be found everywhere. Its cultural and artistic heritage alone includes 7 UNESCO sites, some of which are cumulative – like all the baroque towns in the Noto Valley – and spread throughout the territory.
What can you expect from a place where human presence dates back to the Palaeolithic era? From 35,000 years ago to the present day, the succession of peoples and cultures has been constant throughout the ages, and today, the archaeological parks that can be visited bear witness to the greatest peoples in history: the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans founded cities here whose finds are world-famous and of worldwide resonance.
A trip to Sicily means being able to combine a visit to this immense heritage with the possibility today of attending major events, often organised in prestigious historical settings. An emblematic example is the Tribute to Vincenzo Bellini, an annual event that pays due homage to the author of Norma, to whom the Region has chosen to assign the international role of ambassador of Sicily. The Tribute to Vincenzo Bellini, in addition to being a great artistic event, is an appointment that aims to bring prestige to Sicily, further enhancing its centrality in the Mediterranean, thanks to its inestimable tangible and intangible heritage.
Last September, for example, saw the first edition of the Sicilia Jazz Festival, with a calendar full of big names and new artistic projects. International artists took turns on the stages of Palermo’s historic centre, supported by enthusiastic public participation, which has already given rise to the launch of the 2022 edition.
And to remind us that Sicily’s immense heritage, thanks also to its extraordinary climate, can be enjoyed in every season, a new cultural festival will be organised in Taormina and Erice, emblematic places of the island’s culture, from 6 December 2021 to 6 January 2022. The idea is to set up Christmas markets, but also to use the amphitheatre for music events, such as the New Year’s Eve concert, or preview screenings of the Filmfestival.
Contended by the peoples who have crossed the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily has always been a popular destination for its extraordinarily varied territory.
One thousand five hundred kilometres of coastline in an infinite variety: immense beaches of light-coloured sand or pebbles, small and steep, white cliffs in many shades of ochre, yellow and grey, even black lava. But if the collective imagination calls to mind a Sicily of the sea, the truth is that the region’s territory is mostly an up-and-down series of gentle hills whose colour changes with the changing seasons, crowning the highest peak on the island, one of the region’s most significant symbols: the volcano Etna.
Given these assumptions, which describe a rich and picturesque nature, why not choose Sicily as a destination for outdoor sports activities? To showcase the enormous possibilities that the destination has to offer in this field, the first Sports Tourism Fair has been announced, scheduled for spring 2022, with the aim of highlighting all the sports activities that can be practised in Sicily and the tourism spin-off they can create. Stands, fields and demonstrations of Padel, tennis, swimming, diving, surfing, windsurfing, climbing, biking and many other sports.
Finally, it is worth mentioning one of the most celebrated aspects of Sicilian culture on a global level: food. Entire books would be needed to describe the flavours and colours of food in Sicily. A vibrant rainbow of flavours, ranging from the simple to the elaborate, but always unforgettable. The excellent ingredients that make up Sicilian cuisine are the same pillars of the Mediterranean diet, of which Sicily is the fundamental and undisputed hub.
