September sees the renewal of the I Tuoi Cammini nature trekking programme in Umbria.
These are excursions to special, pleasant, silent places, such as the one along the route of the former Spoleto Norcia railway, decommissioned in 1968, an iconic road that runs alongside the river Nera, with crossings of the ancient tunnels dug into the rock, immersed in the vegetation of the Valnerina and a symbol of regeneration and sustainability (Saturday 4 September), on Monte Cucco, from Badia di Sitria to Fonte Avellana, a true mosaic of environments that follow one another and fit together in an extraordinary way (Sunday 19 September), light trekking in the hills of Bettona (Pg) in collaboration with the sports event Umbria Crossing Outdoor (Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September), literary walks such as those organised in collaboration with the Rassegna Suoni Controvento on Mount Subasio (Sunday 12 September).
The project of the Association “I tuoi Cammini”, born in Assisi, has among its objectives to connect active outdoor tourism and the tourist-landscape, cultural and gastronomic offer of Umbria.
It wants to be a point of reference to respond to the demand of those who want to walk, those who want to discover unknown places immersed in nature, but also to link outdoor activities to music, culture and food and wine events, or those who want to walk “the Cammini”.
The first excursion proposed for September, the month of outdoor activities in Umbria, will take place on Saturday 4 September, on the occasion of the Spoleto Norcia mtb event, starting at 3pm from Spoleto (Pg) and will involve the first section of the former Spoleto Norcia railway, from Spoleto to Caprareccia (see photo), with the passage through a tunnel dug into the rock, exactly 1936 metres long and completely dark.
The railway line, which connected the cities of Spoleto and Norcia, was inaugurated in 1926 and represented, for those times, a small jewel of railway engineering: along the route of just over 50 kilometres, 19 tunnels, 24 bridges and viaducts of great architectural value were built, with helical line sections and gradients of up to 4.5%.
The railway was decommissioned in 1968 and, after many years of disuse, a bicycle and pedestrian path was opened on the route of the old railway in July 2014. The route of the former Spoleto Norcia railway runs along the river Nera, with crossings of the old tunnels carved into the rock, immersed in the vegetation of the Valnerina is a symbol of regeneration and sustainability.
At the end of the excursion, back at the starting point, participants will be treated to a snack of excellent local products.
